The Base Torres Trek is one of the most attractive and famous excursions offered by Torres del Paine National Park. Walk with us and enjoy the incredible and varied landscapes we will encounter on our way to the Base Torres Viewpoint, the place where you will be closest to this natural wonder.
We depart from your accommodation in Puerto Natales heading towards Torres del Paine National Park via Route 9.
After an hour and a half of travel, we will arrive at the Laguna Amarga Entrance, where we will register at the CONAF facilities. We will then head to the Welcome Center of the Las Torres Reserve, where our guides will give a pre-hike briefing as we prepare to begin the Base Torres trek, the most famous in the park and one of the most renowned in the world.
Along the way, we will be accompanied by our guides on a 22 km round-trip hike, lasting approximately 8 hours, along a medium-high difficulty trail that will gradually immerse us in the mountain environment.
We will begin walking along the trail towards an old bridge that crosses the Ascencio River. After 1.5 hours of hiking with a moderate incline, we will reach El Chileno Refuge, located on the banks of the Ascencio River, where we will rest and have a snack.
We will continue through a dense Lenga forest (Nothofagus pumilio), crossing several streams that flow down from Mount Almirante Nieto, until we reach the end of the forest, where we can rest for a few moments before starting the ascent to the viewpoint.
From here, the trail becomes steeper as we walk along the side of the glacial moraine, passing by small stunted forests, evidence that we are entering a mountain environment. One hour later, we will reach the Base Torres Viewpoint, located to the east of the lagoon at 870 meters above sea level, where we will have a spectacular view of the three granite giants: the South, Central, and North Towers (De Agostini, Central, and Monzino), along with the Peineta and Nido de Cóndores peaks, and the Torres lagoon and glacier. With this view, we will take some time to rest and enjoy our box lunch while our guides tell us about the geological history of these unique mountains, with the satisfaction of being as close as possible to this natural wonder.
We will descend along the same trail back to the Welcome Center, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Natales.
