It is located 247 kilometres northwest from Punta Arenas and 2.036 kilometres south from Santiago, and it is the primary transit point for travellers to beautiful landscapes well-known worldwide like Torres del Paine National Park, Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, Kaweskar National Park and Mylodon Cave Natural Monument in Chile. Additionally, in Argentina there are two other famous parks: Los Glaciares National Park and Monte León National Park.
In winter, you can navigate on fixed dates, do winter tours and the famous hike to the Base of the Towers viewpoint. You can also visit the ski station in Rio Turbio (Argentina), and by boat to the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers, as well as to the seven glaciers located in the Canal de las Montañas.
Puerto Natales is located on a gentle slope from where the Cordillera Riesco, Cordillera Chacabuco, Paine Massive and the Southern Ice Field can be seen. It has a population of 21.477 inhabitants and it is the primary transit point for the tourist attractions mentioned before.
Puerto Natales has a rich tourism infrastructure that provides tourists with a wide variety of services like: accommodation facilities, cafés, restaurants, shops and supermarkets, casinos, museums, gyms and travel agencies that provide a wide variety of tours for all types of travellers (hikes, navigation, biking etc.)
MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
It is the main attraction because of its stunning landscapes, fauna and flora. Here you can enjoy spectacular views of the Paine Towers and Paine Horns, some of the mountains that shaped this beautiful and special landscape.
In this landscape it is possible to see glacial lakes, and a rich fauna like: pumas, guanacos, foxes, condors, wild geese, ñandus and black-necked swans among other species. Thick forests with their characteristic "beards" grant the landscape its own special charm.
Along this lovely pathway you can enjoy the views of several mountain ranges: Cerro Tenerife, Mocho, Benítez, Paine Grande and Monte Balmaceda. In winter, snow covers these mountains, making the landscape both charming and mystical.
In addition, in its waters there is a large diversity of bird species like: black-necked swans, coscoroba swans, seagulls, cormorants and flamingos.
In the province of Última Esperanza there are a lot of Estancias that open their doors for those tourists interested in knowing the patagonian customs. They offer the best facilities and touristic services like horse-back riding, hikes, etc.
The plant at Puerto Bories was funded in 1915, it was a project of the Sociedad Ganadera de Tierra del Fuego for the sheep industry of most of the Estancias in the region. In 1996 it was declared a Historic Monument.
Today, Puerto Bories is a restored hotel with an impressive museum.
Beyond its strategic location near Torres del Paine National Park, Bernardo O'Higgins National Park by Chile, such as Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, Puerto Natales is the gateway to spectacular landscapes, you can also trekking the hills near the city such as Dorotea Hill, Benitez, Olla, Mocho, the Whale that is in front of Puerto Natales in the Antonio Varas Peninsula.
